FAQ

Common Questions

Answers to what patients most frequently ask before their first consultation.

What cancers does Dr. Koirala treat?
Dr. Koirala specialises in oral cavity cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, thyroid and parathyroid cancers, laryngeal cancer, salivary gland tumours, nasal and sinus cancers, skull base tumours, and cervical lymph node metastases.
Do I need a referral to book a consultation?
No referral is required. You can directly book a consultation via phone, WhatsApp, or the appointment form on this website. Bringing any prior medical reports, imaging, or biopsy results to your first visit is helpful but not mandatory.
Will surgery affect my voice or swallowing?
Dr. Koirala uses nerve-sparing and function-preserving techniques specifically designed to protect voice, swallowing, and facial movement. The goal is always to remove the cancer while maintaining the best possible quality of life. Outcomes vary by case and will be discussed in detail before any procedure.
How long is recovery after head and neck surgery?
Recovery depends on the extent of surgery. Minor procedures may require 1–3 days hospitalisation, while complex reconstructive operations can require 7–14 days. A structured follow-up and rehabilitation plan is provided to every patient post-surgery.
Is thyroid surgery safe? Will I need lifelong medication?
Thyroid surgery at CMC is performed using nerve monitoring to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerve. If the entire thyroid is removed (total thyroidectomy), daily thyroid hormone replacement (thyroxine) is required. For partial removal, medication may not be necessary.
Can I get a second opinion before deciding on surgery?
Absolutely. Dr. Koirala encourages patients to seek second opinions and take the time they need to feel confident in their treatment decision. All cases are also reviewed by the multidisciplinary tumour board at CMC Cancer Institute.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring any prior CT/MRI/PET scans (on CD or printed), biopsy reports, blood test results, a list of current medications, and a valid ID. If you have seen other doctors for the same problem, bring those referral letters or reports as well.
Does CMC Cancer Institute have insurance coverage?
CMC Cancer Institute accepts various health insurance schemes including government health insurance (Rastriya Swasthya Bima Karyakram) and many private insurers. Please contact the hospital billing department or WhatsApp us to confirm coverage for your specific plan.
